Welcome to the latest issue of the AI Community Learning Series – a space to explore how leaders and innovators are reshaping industries with AI. 🚀
In this session, Bella Liu, Co-Founder and CEO of Orby AI, shared her journey of building a transformative AI platform, insights into AI adoption challenges, and her framework for measuring ROI. If you missed it, watch the event recording here.
Below are the highlights of our conversation:
1. From UiPath to Orby: Reimagining Automation with AI
Bella Liu’s founding journey reflects her belief that automation tools should not only handle repetitive tasks but also enable teams to focus on higher-value opportunities. Her time at UiPath, where she worked from its early stages through IPO, shaped her understanding of automation’s potential and limitations.
After UiPath’s IPO, Bella partnered with a former Google AI leader to co-found Orby AI. Together, they set out to create a platform powered by generative AI to address the complexities of modern workflows. Since its founding, Orby has raised $35M in Series A funding and deployed its platform to Fortune 50 and Fortune 500 companies. These organizations now rely on Orby for mission-critical workflows like finance auditing and legal contract review, achieving significant time and cost savings.
2. Large Action Model: Turning Action into Automation
At the heart of Orby AI is the Large Action Model (LAM), a proprietary AI system designed to observe, learn, and automate workflows seamlessly. Bella explained that the LAM works like an “intern with general intelligence” by analyzing user actions—such as logging in, completing forms, or clicking buttons—and then generating automations that adapt to changing circumstances.
Unlike traditional rule-based systems, automations powered by a LAM require significantly less setup time and effort. Enterprises that previously spent months programming workflows can now deploy automations in a matter of days. This adaptability ensures that organizations can scale their operations without being bogged down by maintenance challenges.

3. Generative Process Automation: A Paradigm Shift in Efficiency
Bella introduced the concept of Generative Process Automation (GPA), which enables AI Agents to handle tasks requiring reasoning, judgment, and decision-making—areas where rule-based systems struggle. This paradigm shift has unlocked efficiencies previously overlooked or thought impossible.
One successful customer example is a Fortune 500 client’s expense auditing process. Previously, their finance team could audit only 10% of expense receipts, relying on simple rules that left room for error. By implementing Orby AI, they now audit 100% of expenses, saving $4 million annually through fraud detection and improving compliance. The team also reduced manual review time by 95% while gaining complete visibility into the auditing process for the first time.

4. Overcoming AI Adoption Challenges with Guided Autonomy
Bella identified key challenges in AI adoption: managing accuracy, addressing security / privacy concerns, and handling organizational resistance to change. To address these, Orby AI employs a “Guided Autonomy” framework—a phased approach to implementing AI.
Initially, AI systems work alongside human reviewers to ensure accuracy and build trust. Over time, as the AI learns and improves through continuous feedback, the need for human oversight diminishes, allowing for near-complete automation. This method not only improves performance but also gives teams the confidence to embrace AI tools, addressing common change management concerns.
Bella emphasized that this gradual transition is crucial for enterprises integrating AI into mission-critical workflows, where errors or resistance could have significant consequences.
5. Measuring ROI: A Multi-Dimensional Framework for AI Investments
When it comes to evaluating AI investments, Bella encouraged leaders to think beyond simple cost savings. Orby AI uses a five-dimension framework to measure the true impact of automation:
Operational Benefits: Increased efficiency, reduced cycle times, and better decision-making.
Governance: Improved compliance, reduced errors, and more consistent processes.
Customer Experience: Faster service delivery and more personalized interactions.
Employee Experience: Reduced monotony and greater job satisfaction, enabling teams to focus on higher-value work.
Financial Impact: Tangible savings, revenue generation, and reallocation of resources to strategic initiatives.
Bella noted that some benefits, like better compliance or improved employee experience, may not immediately appear in financial statements but are equally critical for long-term success. By viewing AI as a strategic investment with a long time horizon, companies can stay competitive in an ever-evolving market.
Conclusion
Orby AI is at the forefront of enterprise automation, demonstrating how AI can transform workflows, improve efficiency, and unlock strategic opportunities. Bella Liu’s insights—from her innovative Large Action Model to practical frameworks for AI adoption and ROI measurement—offer a roadmap for organizations looking to embrace the future of work.
